Have you started thinking about your summer holiday for next year yet? If you’re the sort of person who likes to plan in advance and bag the cheap flights and free child places, you probably have. Just like everything else, holiday destinations fall in and out of fashion for various reasons. Two years ago the hipsters were holidaying in Croatia or Mexico – but where are the up and coming destinations for 2017?

Brazil

The 2016 Olympics showcased Brazil like never before, and there is expected to be a huge increase in bookings of flights to Rio for 2017. The best time to visit Rio is between December and March, when the weather is warm enough for lounging on the beach, but not too humid to make sightseeing a chore. The famous Carnival is held annually in February, and the one sight which isn’t to be missed is the massive statue of Christ the Redeemer. Pregnant women should be cautious when travelling to Brazil because of the ongoing issues with zika virus, and it’s good practice – wherever you are travelling to – to read the Foreign and Commonwealth Office travel advice web pages which will let you know about any particular issues affecting the area you’re visiting.

Newfoundland

One of the less-known parts of Canada, Newfoundland is wild, unexplored and one of the best “away from it all” destinations in the world. This is the place for you if your ideal holiday is whale watching, hiking, gorgeous scenery and quirky villages. The lack of direct flights from Europe makes it harder to get to but it’s definitely worth the effort; check out flights via Toronto for the most cost effective way of getting there. Packages are not readily available to this part of Canada, so you will have to get online and book your flights, accommodation and car hire separately.

Oslo

Norway’s capital city has yet to become as popular for city breaks as Reykjavik or Copenhagen, but is tipped to boom in popularity in the coming years. Oslo isn’t a cheap destination, so plan ahead to minimise costs where possible. Don’t miss the stunning medieval castle called Akershus Fortress, the Viking Ship Museum and the Opera House with views across the city from the roof. Remember too that you can often use your EHIC card to reduce the price of travel insurance for your Norway trip, so make sure you pack it with your pyjamas.

Myanmar

Myanmar – also sometimes known as Burma – has been slow to emerge as a tourist destination. Changes in the ruling regime and a new outward looking ethos has led many experts to tip Myanmar as the next Thailand. The country has spectacular temples, beautiful beaches, monasteries and street markets which will delight the more adventurous tourist. As Myanmar’s tourist industry is still in its infancy, hotels and infrastructure such as hospitals many not always be up to Western standards, and English is not always widely spoken. Do your research and lots of planning before hopping on the plane.
