Money markets have been turbulent since the UK decided it was leaving the EU, and at times when the pound is weak against other major currencies such as the dollar and Euro, this has the effect of making holidays outside the UK more expensive. Unless the situation starts to reverse soon, expect package holidays for 2017 to be more expensive, and if you prefer to book your holiday independently, everything from flights to accommodation and eating out is going to cost you more. But there are still some great value holiday destinations around, if you know where to look.

Vietnam

OK, so it’s not a destination which you can get to easily on a budget airline, but if you shop around online and are flexible about when you travel and are prepared to split your journey into several legs, you can get flights from the UK to Vietnam for around £430 return. The real savings kick in once you arrive; it is easy to pick up rooms in a tourist friendly hostel in Ho Chi Minh city for around £5 a night, including breakfast. There are many long distance tourist coaches at affordable prices to help you explore the country, and a pint of locally produced beer will cost you around 75p. Travelling in a group with other people backpacking can also help you cut costs considerably. One thing not to scrimp on is travel insurance; Vietnam is not a dangerous country, but there is no NHS equivalent and having an accident or falling ill can cost you thousands of pounds.

Bulgaria

It is cheap and easy to get to Bulgaria from the UK, with budget airlines like EasyJet and Ryanair offering flights from as little as £20 from the UK the Bulgarian capital, Sofia. Charter flights are also available during summer months to the resorts on the Black Sea coast. Accommodation costs vary widely, but do your research, be prepared to haggle and you can get a decent room for around £10 – £25 a night outside the main tourist centres. A meal in an inexpensive restaurant will cost around £10, and as Bulgaria is part of the EEA area, you can cut costs further by using your EHIC cover to reduce the overall cost of your travel insurance.

Latvia

One of the best value destinations for a city break is the small Baltic state of Latvia, and its capital city Riga. The city is well served by the budget airlines and many of the better hotels in the old town of Riga will cost around £60 a night for a 4-star rating. Competition between the large number of bars and restaurants means prices are kept low, and you can expect to pay around £4 for a lunch of traditional pancakes or baked potatoes, and £2 for a pint of local beer. Museums and other attractions are cheap, and there are often special prices for students or young people under the age of 25, so make sure you take appropriate ID with you.
